Scientific & Natural Areas, Minnesota.

Minnesota has established 164 SNAs (as of October 2016) for the purpose of preserving, protecting, and for educational purposes areas of critical and unusual natural characteristics.

The State DNR says, "Scientific and Natural Areas are state lands preserving Minnesota's ecological and geological diversity."

The primary goals of SNAs are to,

1. "Ensure that none of Minnesota's natural heritage is lost from any ecological region of the state; and

2. "Provide opportunities for nature-based recreation, education and scientific research.

Often, these area will contain rare and endangered plant or animal species or highly unusual geology.

The Minnesota DNR Website has a section on SNAs: < http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/snas/index.html >.

A volunteer organization called, "Friends of Minnesota Scientific & Natural Areas" has as its "mission to advocate for the establishment, use management, and perpetuation of Minnesota's Scientific and Natural Areas in an undisturbed natural state."
